Let’s Read a Book Together!

(She REFUSES to let my reading experience be great!)

I LOVE to read and I know many of my wonderful blog readers love to read too. As a result of my book review blog posts, a lot of you guys have asked me to form a book club. At first I was like, “NAWL SON!” But now, I’m like, “Okay Bew!” Plus, I really do enjoy the interactions with you guys. <3 Sooooo, LET’S READ A BOOK TOGETHER!

First things first. Who’s down?

I’m thinking we should start March 1st…or the 15th. That’ll give everyone time to buy, rent or reserve the book from the library.

As a former therapists and facilitator of therapy groups, we need to establish some general rules, right?

  • You can come and go as you please. Life happens and I know not everyone will be able to stick with it, and that is ok.
  • Everyone will be respectful. Don’t be cussing people out and using inappropriate language because someone doesn’t agree with what you have to say. slapping_smiley
  • Understand that there will be disagreements, and that is okay!!
  • Stay on topic.
  • Remember, this is supposed to be fun and to encourage reading and healthy discourse.

Are there any other rules that you think we’ll need? If so, list them below and I’ll add them.

I guess we need to decide on a book to read….

Also, here are a few questions that I have before we can start. I want to make sure this is successful.

  • How often shall we check in?
  • What time frame do we have to finish the book?
  • Do we need a facilitator/moderator?

Can you think of any more questions?

I’ll work on a format and stuff. I’m not sure if I’m going to do a forum style / or blog post style.

Please share your ideas, concerns and suggestions.

That’s it guys. Thanks for listening :D I look forward to what you have to say.

Woo hoo! I am super pumped about this! I do think that we should try different genres of books and such. I think it should be like a weekly or bi-weekly check in. Some books that have been out for a while already have book club formats to follow with discussion questions and a reading timeline. Depending on the length is how we should go about deciding on length. As far as the inaugural book for the book club goes I think Sug should pick it. After this one we can do an online voting type of situation on the next book to read. Just my thoughts :-)

Why did I get excited while reading your comment tho. Lol! Thanks for your imput. <3

I think it’s a great idea. Once a week is a good check-in for me I usually read pretty fast.I am not sure about others, but I don’t like to read anything that’s too graphic (sex/violence), but I am game for anything else even non-fiction. Count me in!!!

Ooh wow, a book club. I’d like to do that. Depending on the length of the book would dictate how much time it would take. I’m not into books that are too heavy, lots of cursing, sex, violence and into that paranormal stuff. I would like to be in this.

Sug girl, those pics of our girl Tiny and the books, I’m just so in luv with. I vote Tiny to be the official mascot for the book club. How did you get her to sit still on top of that book?? I bet you bribed her with some treats or catnip.

    • suggie

Chile, Tiny needs NO prompting. She stay ready so she doesn’t have to get ready. Lol

I would like to join in. I am not in a book club, other than the occasional book for our Women’s Ministry. I am like the other ladies, not too much violence or sex. I think weekly or bi-weekly check ins are good as well. I guess it depends on the length of the book. Sug, you read some pretty interesting stuff so it would be nice to see what you come up with. I have been able to finish a book in a week. That book was really good though (Kindred by Octavia Butler). It was a Christmas present and really got me interested in reading again. Can’t wait!

    • suggie

Awesome! I need to do research on a good first book. I too am not interested in a book that is full of crap. I want it to be meaningful.

  • Meika

I am so down for this book club!! I love to read so this perfect for me! I’m hyped!

    • suggie

Yay!! Thanks for supporting the movement!

  • Nemetria

I’d like to be part of the book club. I think anywhere betwenn 2 weeks o a month should be the limit depending on the book

    • suggie

Yay! We have a nice little group.

  • o Kendrick

I would love joing the bookclub. I love reading and can read just about anything. I think we should rotate whos moderates each book and we should meet once a month maybe check in once a week to see how far along everyone is

    • suggie

      Love the rotation idea.

  • Morgan

Yes Ma’am!! I definitely would like to be a part of your book club. I can read fast, but I do agree that check-ins should be bi-weekly to a month. I’m not picky on the genre. Will you be creating a new page for the group? Anywho, keep us updated and I can’t wait to see what you do – now let me just finish “Beautiful Creatures” before the movie is in theaters *turns the page*. I only have 53 pages left!

    • suggie

Ha! I count pages too. I think I’ll add a small forum to the blog. I’ll keep you guys updated.

  • Madinah Sharif

I’m in! I’m game for any genre of book. I really like non fiction books but I’m willing to read fiction of any kind. :-)

    • suggie

How did I miss this? Smh We can do non fiction too. :D

  • Sharon

Hey Sug! I feel so behind… :( I would love to be a part of the book club (it’s my first, yay!!!). Any genre is fine with me.

    • suggie

      You’re fine. You’re not behind.

  • Jay

I would love to join the book club as well. I totally agree with the first comment. #yaybooks (Why do I do that outside of twitter?)

    • suggie

Awesome! I hashtag outside of Twitter too. Lol!!

  • Kristal

Oooh ooh! I want to join to. I think this is going to be fun and help me with my 2013 goal of reading more fiction…I am a non-fiction junkie. I think one book a month is good and with check ins bi-monthly.

Great idea Sug! This is going to be fun.

    • suggie

YAY! I love your enthusiasm. <3
