Flashback Friday: My Natural Hair Deep Conditioner Fail Experience

It’s wintertime. Your natural hair is probably dry. Who are you fooling? Your natural hair is REAL dry. In an effort to relieve #theThirst, you turn to the internet for an all natural, natural hair deep conditioner recipe. Good for you…being all proactive and stuff. Well, that was until you found that avocado and banana deep conditioning recipe and it went all down hill. But Sug, what are you talking about? Well, if you missed the video, here it is.

For those who are reading this blog post at work and your job has some firewall situation set up and you’re unable to view the video, allow me to explain. Last year, I decided to try a homemade deep conditioner recipe. I was all excited. I had my avocado, banana, olive oil and coconut oil also known as, “banacadoil.”

I “mixed” the ingredients together, applied it to my shampooed hair, sat under a hooded dryer and proceeded to bake the banacadoil in my hair. It wasn’t until I tried to rinse out the banacadoil that I realized that I was in trouble.

I spent HOURS trying to remove the stuff from my hair. I shampooed several times. I tried conditioner. I even used up all of the hot water. I was so overwhelmed that I became dizzy. That thing was terrible.

But Sug, how did you get it out of your hair? Well, I called my friend Taz.

(That’s Taz! She blogs at www.PalatableJazz.com)

She came over and from the hours of around 11pm to 2:30am, she went through each section of my hair with a fine toothed comb and an olive oil slash mayonnaise concoction (yes, I used more food to remove the food from my hair). She was able to remove about 95% of the banacadoil from my hair.

I blew my hair out to remove the remaining 5%. That thing was terrible…but my hair looked amazing!

My hair was soooo soft and moisturized!

I put in several flat twists to achieve this look.

Cuteness!

Here is what I learned.

  • Not every natural hair recipe that you read online is the good for you. Nor is it guaranteed to work. I’ve heard of people putting eggs in their hair and ending up with scrambled eggs! #iRefuse
  • I should have blended up the avocado.
  • I should have purred the banana or used baby food.

I hope my tomfoolery serves as a warning to others who want to try this natural hair deep conditioner recipe. That’s it. Thanks for listening. :D

I remember watching this video and I was like looking in horror with you cause I’m like, ‘uh, boo you didn’t blend it first??’ Girl, I wondered how you got it all out, but I’m thankful that you did and it was a lesson for me on what NOT to do. Chile, next time, use that blender machine and smooth that joint all the way out. The hairstyle after all the mayhem is the bizness tho! I just have to ask, what did the 3 D’s & Mr. Rasheed have to say about that? Did they laugh or were they sympathetic toward your plight? 11pm to 2:30am getting that stuff out…OH—-MY—-LAWD—-CHILE. I couldn’t done it and been wide awake.

Girl, my family (and the cat) thought I had lost my mind. They told me not to put food in my hair again. LOL!! Girl, that thing was a hot mess.

Hey Sug. I saw the vid last year when you posted and I am so sorry to say I laughed till I cried. I couldn’t help it. When you looked at the camera and said “You ever been so mad, your get dizzy!” I was done, the end, dead. I am glad you managed to get it out though, cause that was a hot mess. The pics after are beautiful. Be blessed!

HA! It was rather funny. I remember being so defeated that I broke out into a fit of laughter. HA! The things we do to cope. Smh

Reminds me of the banana fiasco I had. What made it even worse is I had starter locs in. I washed my hair I swear about 5 times that day which only made the banana bits slimier and harder to remove. I still add a banana to my deep conditioner but I own a ninja food processor now. Never going through that mess again.

You’re more brave then me. I’m not doing that again. The whole experience was traumatizing.

I am watching the video at work and I am FIGHTING tears. I’m glad no one is close to me because at one point I was doubled over. OMG! I was thinking of doing this DC when I got home tonight but now….NOT SO MUCH! LOL!
