Frequently Asked Natural Hair Questions

Frequently Asked Natural Hair Questions

Well, lookie here!

It looks like I need a frequently asked natural hair questions page because LAWD knows I get asked some of the same hair questions all the time. Since you guys are NOT mind readers, I’ve decided to create this post.

How long have you been natural? I went natural on 2 December 2004. I’ve been natural for 8 years. bigcut_2(This is how it all began.)

How did you get your hair to grow? I don’t do anything special to get my hair to grow. I am, however, able to retain a lot of what I grow. Here is how:

  • Genetic! Genetics play a huge part in how much hair you can grow and retain.
  • I don’t use much heat on my hair.
  • I do a lot of protective styles (two strand twists, buns, braids).
  • I make sure I moisturize my hair.
  • I remove split and weathered ends.
  • I am careful when I comb and brush my hair.
  • I use my fingers to style my hair.

How can I make my hair grow? Believe it or not, your hair IS growing (unless you have a medical condition). Now, the rate in which your hair grows depends on genetics! The growth cycle occurs in phases (all genetic) and madame google can go into further detail. ALL hair textures grow! All of them! But Sug, I have 6Z hair. Your hair is growing. On average, people grown about 1/2 an inch of hair per month. Some grow more, while some grow less. YOUR GENETICS DETERMINE ALL OF THIS! I will say, however, some hair textures show more length than others. I find that a lot of people are unable to retain a lot of the hair that they grow due to over manipulation and lack of moisture.

How long did it take you to get your hair to its current length? About 3-4 years. I cut my hair a lot.

(27 November 2012, lightly flat ironed hair)

How long is your hair? Between 18-21 inches

How often do you cut your hair? I don’t have a set schedule. barber I dust my ends a lot and I trim/cut my hair when I feel inclined.

What products do yo use? I keep it pretty simple. I use TRESemme Natural Nourishing Moisture Conditioner for my conditioner washes and overall conditioning. When I shampoo I use a sulfate free shampoo like Trader Joe’s Nourish Spa Balance Moisturizing Shampoo or Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Castile Soap. I use a water based leave in conditioner like Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk. I seal the moisture in my hair with an oil. I LOVE Trader Joe’s Organic Virgin Coconut Oil. When I do use heat, I use Silk Elements MegaSilk Heat Protection Spray. For my wash and go’s, I use Eco Styler Olive Oil Styling Gel. For my buns and ponytails, I use Proclaim Aloe Styling Gel.

How did you get your mini bald spots/edges to grow back? I used Wild Growth Hair Oil (I wasn’t consistent) and I used EXTREME care when dealing with those areas.

Do you color your hair? No. My hair has always been this rusty-brown color.

(80′s Sug)

Why don’t you color your grays? Cause I don’t want to.

How often do you shampoo your hair? Weekly

How many big chops have you had? 3

(2nd Big Chop, Dec 2005)

(3rd Big Chop, July 2007)

Why have you cut your hair so many times? Boredom and variety.

What is your hair type? I don’t know. I don’t subscribe to the hair typing system. I do have a video, however.

How come I missed this??? Ok, its straight to the point. Shouldn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out. BOOM. Thanks for helping those who don’t like reading and researching & stuff.

    • suggie

Cause it’s new. You know I struggle with folk who don’t bother to read. Smh

  • Hotkoko80

Sug, you are by far one of the more honest sisters I have followed. I am truly inspired by your blog, style an authenticity. Go girl! I have been natural for years, but my usual style was big chop status. About a year ago I decided to grow my fro. Needless to say its been a long year. How do you maintain a twist out. I struggle with this one? Anyway, your hair is simply marvelous.
    God luv!
    Go Ravens!

    • suggie

Thank you so much! When I have a twist out, I retwist with jumbo twists and cover them with a bonnet at night. Now, the twist out doesn’t look the same as the days go on. Also, I find that my hair becomes more stretched.

So thankful I found your channel youtube today, it definitely motivated me to start trying new things with my hair and go through the whole trial and error process. My question for you is, do you find that because u have to use so many products in your hair that you get alot of build up on your scalp pretty easily? That’s one of my biggest problems cause my hair gets really ‘dirty’ and itchy after like 2/3 days, cause I use so many products on a daily basis.

    • suggie

Hi Moya! I’m glad that you found me and that’s a good question. When I put products on my hair, I try to stay away from my scalp (accept when I use jojoba oil). I don’t find that products cause me build up, but my own juices and berries cause me to have build up on scalp…I have an oily scalp. Also, I find when I don’t get enough water, I suffer from funky scalp. As a general rule, I try to clean my hair, weekly.

hello this is my 4th year with out a relaxer I press my hair and wrap it and it last two weeks in the winter. In the summer I sweat in my scalp and my style last maybe a week is there anything I can put on my scalp so my hair style can last?

  • Naturally Yew

Hi Sug, great to read about your hair. Look forward to reading more when you’re off break.

  • maiama

    Hi Sugar,
I am subscribed to your YT channel and love watching your videos.

You talked about the curly girl method for a little whike then stopped. and in other videos, you mentioned shampooing so I am guessing that you no longer do the CG (unless you have you are doing a modified CG method. May I ask you are still doing the CG or if (and why) you have stopped. Thank you in advance for your reply. I am not doing the CG right now but was thinking of doing it in the near. so I would like to know some pros and cons of the method.

Thank you in advance for your reply.

    Take care
